Zebra mussels have become a large threat to our lakes, and early detection can prevent the spread to other water bodies. We recommend a comprehensive monitoring program that includes both Zebra mussel veliger and adult monitoring. This program can be implemented by volunteers. See below for options.
- Study design and site establishment
- Field collection
- Lab identification
- Volunteer monitor training in Zebra mussel veliger collection
- Volunteer monitoring program design for both Zebra mussel adults and veligers
Veligers are the microscopic larval stage of Zebra mussels. They are unable to be seen with the naked eye and require a microscope for identification.
Monitoring Details
We will supply sample bottles and lake maps of recommended testing sites for all clients. A data sheet and standard lab chain of custody must accompany all samples submitted to the laboratory. You can print these data sheets from the links below.
