How to Use an Integrated Sampler

A 2-meter integrated sampler is used for collecting surface water samples in a lake for Total Phosphorus and Chlorophyll-a analysis.  It enables the sampler to collect an integrated sample of the top 2 meters of the water column.  It is simply a 2-meter pvc pipe with a rubber stopper on each end.

Purchase Information
To order a 2-meter integrated sampler, contact Moriya Rufer (218-846-1465,

). The cost of the 2-meter integrated sampler is $30, which includes tax and shipping. Proper maintenance and storage guidelines

Collecting Water with an Integrated Sampler

1. Remove the stopper at each end and rinse the sampler with lake water 3-4 times on one side of the boat.

2. On the opposite side of the boat, SLOWLY submerse the sampler vertically into the water until the top of it is approximately 6 inches from water's surface.

3. Insert the rubber stopper on the top end of the sampler.  If using a vacuum stopper, tighten the screw.

4. Raise the sampler slowly out of the water and replace the bottom stopper before pulling the sampler out of the water to prevent loss of the water sample.

5. Invert the tube to mix the 2-meter water column sample. Carefully let out the bottom stopper and pour the whole sample into a sample bottle.  If a representative sample is not transferred to the bottle, please discard and resample.

6. At the end of the day, rinse the integrated sampler with tap water and allow it to air dry before putting the stoppers back in. Proper Maintenance and Storage Procedures

Helpful Hints:

·     It is helpful to have two people working together with an integrated sampler.  One person can hold the sampler on their shoulder while the other one handles the sample container.

·     Rinsing your sampler is very important to avoid contamination of your sample.  Rinse with lake water before collecting your sample, and rinse with tap water at the end of the day before storing your sampler.  Proper Maintenance and Storage Procedures
